Youth Program

The primary purpose of the National Brotherhood of Skiers is to find, select and fund youth who have the desire and talent to become a member of a United States Winter Olympic Ski Team. To that end, the Western Region, through its member ski clubs, conducts an extensive youth training program. A significant percentage of the Region's annual budget is spent in providing scholarships and supplemental development programs to enhance the competitive level of our youth racers.

Western Regions Youth Program has two major components: (1)Building Essential skills and Talents (BEST) Program, a learning experience and (2) A Racing Development Program consisting of Dryland Training; Local Race training; Kwanza/Thanksgiving Race Camp; Winter Carnival Race Series and a Regional Scholarship Program.

BEST 2001

The annual BEST Program is specifically targeted for minority youth. The program is a week-long series of lectures, presentations, learning experiences/activities and videos strategically organized to create and obtain the best possible learning environment for youth. The program is intellectually stimulating and fun! Traditionally, the BEST Program has been a summer program held on a college campus. Youth are housed in the college dorms, have access to other college campus facilities, and are chaperoned by adult volunteers from the NBS ski clubs.

Professionals from various business entities, community leaders and public officials are invited as presenters and instructors and serve as role models for the youth. Last year's program included the following sessions: Career Exploration & Preparedness, Conflict Resolution/Violence Prevention, Owning your own business, Money Management, Value of Investing, College Preparation, How to take standardized tests, Social Etiquette and Personal Awareness (Speech and Diction), Role Play Job Interviews, Financing College, Teens Dating and Relationships work groups. Racing Development Program

The NBS Youth Program utilizes a pyrimid structure wherein the Regional youth programs provide talented and trained youth to programs at the national level.
