Youth Programs

In 1973, the beginning of an initiative was formed which has changed the winter sports industry. Skiing enthusiasts of color chose to formalize a gathering to not only enjoy the sport together, but to celebrate with friends, colleagues and family. Soon thereafter, the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) ventured beyond those formative ideas to proactively seek out and support athletes whose dreams were to represent the United States in the winter Olympics. The mission statement has evolved to not only embrace those dreams but to recognize how the NBS can make a difference by expanding participation. That statement is:

“To identify, develop and support athletes of color who will WIN international and Olympic winter sports competitions representing the United States and to increase participation in winter sports.”

Since then progress has been made as athletes such as Andre and Suki Horton became members of the US Ski Team. Bonnie St. John was an Olympic medalist in the Paralympics where Ralph Green competed in the 2014 games in Sochi.

Team NBS is the brand around our athletes throughout the United States who are pursuing athletic excellence in alpine and free skiing programs. Zyre Austin, a free skier, was the top US woman at the World Juniors in Italy and was an alternate for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. These dreams are not without their challenges with the most visible one being that of costs. None of these athletes could pursue these dreams without the support of your registration at the national event, contributions of money and time. Our athletes have not stopped dreaming and we cannot stop supporting those dreams. This is why support of your local club’s youth programming, the regional youth focus, and the national event is so very important.

The NBS has taken bold steps to act on its mission through its OutReach program which provides a portion of resources to clubs who are introducing new youth to winter sports each year, coast to coast in a structured program on and off the slopes.

Much has been done; but there is much more to accomplish. Through your attendance at national Black Ski Summits (“The Summit”), Annual Meeting / Challenge Cup (AM/CC), and regional events both on and off the slopes, you make these things possible!
