NATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF SKIERS AND WHISTLER MOUNTAIN SKI CLUB ORGANIZE
THEIR FIRST INTERNATIONAL OPEN INVITATIONAL SUPER G AT SUMMIT 2003
December 20, 2002 - Chicago, IL - National Brotherhood of
Skiers (NBS) will host its bi-annual Summit at Whistler - Blackcomb February
1 - 8, 2003. Team NBS and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) will hold
an international ski competition speed event there February 5th and 6th. Summit
2003 Open Invitational Super G is expected to draw 120 participants.
This will represent the fifth year of elite level ski competition at NBS annual
events. However, this is the first held outside the United States. Summit
2003 Open Invitational Super G is a national points race. It will offer the
following participant categories: Kinder, Junior, Masters, and Disabled. Athletes
will be competing in all age group categories. Racers will use February 5
for practice and compete in two Super G runs on February 6.
NBS Competition Director, Schone Malliet, and Whistler Mountain Ski Club Program
Director, Nigel Cooper, combined efforts to develop a great event for their
athletes. "American skiers love Whistler. The NBS voted by overwhelming
majority to host Summit 2003 at Whistler - Blackcomb. We just put our heads
together to also allow our athletes to continue to advance their training
in the broadest competitive field while their families enjoy one of North
America's top ski resorts", said Schone. "Canadian athletes typically
travel much farther to get an international field. With this event, the WMSC
gets an elite level international race at home, it's the best of both worlds",
according to Cooper. Nigel and Schone are looking to make this one the seasons'
best event for all participants.
Team NBS has a strong contingent planning to compete with USST Development
Team member Andre Horton, USSA Western Elite Ski Team member Suki Horton,
and speed event age category leader Errol Kerr. Whistler is bringing its top
competitors as well, including Rachel Walker, Chris Colpitts, Kendall Benbow,
Julia Murray, Matthew Holler, Morgan Pridy, and Toria Whitney.
The Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC) is a non-profit society that was founded
in 1968, shortly after the opening of the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation.
The Club's activity is focused on alpine ski racing. The racing program is
designed for racers ages eleven and up and currently has 6 athletes on the
Canadian Alpine Ski Team. WMSC provides year round on-snow and dry-land programs.
