Midwest Ski Kansas City begins its 25th year!!! Approximately 25 African Americans met at the downtown airport one evening to talk about skiing. Bill and Pam Robinson, avid California skiers, had recently relocated to Leavenworth and wanted to start a ski club. The emphasis was placed on introducing African Americans, especially youth, to this winter sport. Midwest Ski and Travel Club name was chosen with a nickname of Black Ski KC. The first club bus trip was to Steamboat Springs, Colorado for Thanksgiving 1982. We stayed in The Ranch condos and began sliding, laughing, rolling, falling, tumbling, screaming, praying and finally for some, skiing down the bunny hill! We dressed in assorted attire: non-descript snow suits, non-matching bibs and jackets, assorted gloves, colorful hats, ear muffs, too much clothing (2 of everything) we heard it was cold! Use of sunscreen was different since it was cold. Later, with darken noses we began to understand why sunscreen. After several Thanksgivings at Steamboat Springs we joined the Rocky Mountain Region’s Youth Camp with trips to Keystone, CO. Many youth made that trip and not only learned to ski, but some also participated in racing! To promote youth involvement, Saturdays at Snow Creek Weston, Missouri were started. Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops, Jack & Jill teens, church groups, family, friends and other organizations joined in on the fun. Several youth have also participated in the NBS Summit youth programs. After affiliating with the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) many members attended the Summits: Lake Placid, Sun Valley, Steamboat Springs, Keystone, Copper Mountain, Park City, Banff, Vail, Whistler, Lake Tahoe, and Austria just to name a few. Other fun trips included: Chicago, Ozarks, Padre Island, Breckenridge Jazz Festival, Las Vegas and Australia. Our name changed again to Midwest Ski KC! MSKC’s members reside in Greater Kansas City, Dallas, Chicago, Washington D.C., Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Germany, New York, New Jersey, St. Louis, Rhode Island, Virginia, Connecticut and London.

At a time when African Americans on the ski slopes were a rarity and black ski clubs were an exception, Ben Finley and Art Clay were not deterred from their vision to create a national Black Ski Summit. READMORE
