History
Welcome to the Avalanche Ski Club web page, a Montgomery, AL Chapter of the National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc. (NBS). In 1990, the Avalanche Ski Club became an affiliate of the National Brotherhood of Skiers. Avalanche Ski Club of Montgomery, Alabama was founded by Mrs. Burnestine Taylor in 1989. She and her husband Mr. Norman Taylor had skied with the National Brotherhood of Skiers in Colorado, which lead her to consider starting a club in Montgomery. Our Charter membership consisted of only eight members but we have grown considerably with over forty members.
Our membership consist of singles and families. The children really enjoy skiing and we enjoy watching them, often times in amazement, because they catch on to the sport so easily. Mrs. Taylor had skied for several years before starting the organization, therefore she had the experience, which she shared with members. We have followed her lead by extending that same kindness and guidance to all new members. We make sure that a new skier is well taken care of.
The first NBS affiliated trip that we took was to Lake Tahoe and we have participated in each summit through the years. We often have additional trips that are closer to the Montgomery area. We have skied Seven Springs, Pennsylvania and Snow Shoe, West Virginia several times. During the summer months we have biking tours, horse back riding tours, lake parties and picnics.
Part of our membership dues help to pay for training for prospective Olympic skiers. The funds are distributed to each region to fund community based programs that assist in training youth skiers. All are welcomed, so please feel free to contact us.
